Freud did seem to gravitate to stimulants--nicotine being the other one. Probably, though, much of the worlds thinking and advancement have been accompanied by stimulant use--nicotine and caffeine being the most commonly used ones, perhaps someday eclipsed by stimulant medication use. Victor Frankl remarked the depression of being denied caffeine or nicotine in the concentration camp "The fact that we had neither nicotine nor caffeine also contributed to the state of apathy and irritability. Besides these physical causes, there were mental ones,"

For casual reading, "The 7 Per Cent Solution" is a novel ofnovel of Freud treating Sherlock Holmes cocaine use.
